2025 Annual Meeting Recap

ASOR 2025 Annual Meeting Recap

Boston and Hybrid | November 19-22

ASOR held its hybrid Annual Meeting last month, November 19-22, at the Hilton Boston Park Plaza and online. More than 1,100 people were registered for the meeting, with approximately 950 attending in Boston.

The hybrid format of the meeting offered a way for attendees in Boston and online to share their research on an international platform. There were more than 600 paper, poster, and workshop presentations given on the academic program. ASOR’s Annual Meeting Mobile App (powered by Guidebook) provided means for in-person and virtual attendees to connect and to build personalized schedules.

If you attended the 2025 Annual Meeting in Boston or online, please complete the 2025 Annual Meeting Evaluation to provide valuable feedback that will be considered as we plan for 2026 and beyond.

Read on for a summary of the 2025 Annual Meeting, including features from the academic program, the business schedule, special events, and the 2025 ASOR Honors & Awards.

The 2025 hybrid Annual Meeting opened on Wednesday, November 19, with the Plenary Address by Dr. Timothy P. Harrison (Director of the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC) and Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology at the University of Chicago) titled, The Middle East Cultural Heritage Crisis and Why It Matters. The presentation generated a lot of discussion and enthusiasm, which continued throughout the evening at the Welcome Reception. View the Opening Remarks from ASOR’s Executive Director and President, as well as the Plenary Address by Dr. Timothy P. Harrison here.

The sessions, workshops, and posters on the academic program took place Thursday through Saturday, November 20-22. There were over 125 sessions and workshops with presenters representing 30 countries. The Poster Session featured more than 40 projects shared in Boston, as well as a virtual poster gallery. Online attendees could join sessions and workshops via Zoom from the 2025 ASOR Online Schedule. This was a valuable resource, not only for those who are unable to travel, but also for local registrants who had to be on campus or at their office during portions of the meeting that they would have otherwise missed. Session and workshop organizers were supported by ASOR assistants who were trained to facilitate the hybrid logistics of the meeting.

The recorded content of the Annual Meeting is being edited and will be available to registered attendees via the ASOR Online Portal / 2025 Online Schedule through July of 2026. Registration includes access to past Annual Meeting content in the ASOR Online Library. Register for the 2026 ASOR Annual Meeting or purchase access to the ASOR Online Library in the ASOR Online Portal for continued access.[/vc_wp_text][vc_single_image image=”106924″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][mk_padding_divider][vc_wp_text]

In addition to the academic program, attendees in Boston enjoyed several special events at the Hilton Boston Park Plaza, as well as extracurricular programs organized by members, and complimentary access to the Museum of Fine Arts with an ASOR name badge. Events at the Hilton Boston Park Plaza included the Early Career Scholars brown-bag lunch panel, Roundtable Discussions, and the Exhibit Raffle. Receptions were hosted during the event by ASOR, the Madaba Plains Regional Project, and the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI). Before the meeting, attendees had the option to attend a seal carving workshop organized by Pinar Durgun, a workshop at the Harvard Art Museums organized by Jennifer Thum on building visitors’ museum literacy, and a tour of Little Syria with members of the ASOR GIV Committee.

The Exhibit Hall at the Hilton Boston Park Plaza included publishers, book sellers, universities, and booths by 2025 Annual Meeting sponsors, University of Chicago Press (Platinum Sponsor), Eisenbrauns / Penn State University Press (Platinum Sponsor), and ISD (Platinum Sponsor). Attendees browsed the exhibits on the centrally located Mezzanine foyer between sessions and during sponsored coffee breaks.

After the Annual Meeting, nearly 300 people stayed to celebrate ASOR’s 125th Anniversary with a festive evening of dining, live music, member-curated playlists, and ASOR-themed activities.

ASOR would like to thank everyone who participated and contributed to the success of the 2025 Annual Meeting. Please enjoy some of the memorable moments captured in the photo album below, and we hope you will continue to enjoy the recorded content from the meeting through June 2026.

Please mark your calendars for ASOR’s 2026 Annual Meeting at the Hilton Chicago and online, November 18–21. Registration is open! The Call for Member-Organized Session & Workshop proposals will be open from December 15, 2025, to January 15, 2026.

ALERT: Fraudulent E-Mails, Calls, and Phishing Scams

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Many organizations, including ASOR, are being targeted by fraudulent companies and individuals that mine for contact information to use in phishing scams such as mailing lists, fake hotel reservations, and money transfer requests. Unfortunately, ASOR members have reported receiving e-mails from fraudsters posing as ASOR representatives, even using the ASOR logo, trying to sell marketing lists or other services.

These individuals are not authorized by ASOR, the Annual Meeting hotel, or any of ASOR’s partners, to contact you on our behalf.  No one from ASOR will contact you to ask for credit card information or banking details to be sent by e-mail.  Always check the e-mail address of the sender – a message from ASOR will end in @asor.org (not gmail or another account).

When making hotel reservations for ASOR’s Annual Meeting, book directly in ASOR’s Room Block at the conference hotel via the link or telephone number listed on ASOR’s website. No one will call you from ASOR or the hotel asking you to make a hotel reservation. Please let us know if you receive a fraudulent e-mail or phone call. We will do everything we can to address this situation and we appreciate your cooperation.

Covid Protocol – 2022 Annual Meeting

Covid Protocol Update for 2022 Annual Meeting

September 7, 2022

Dear fellow ASOR members,

We write with an update on COVID protocols for our upcoming Annual Meeting in Boston. The well-being of our members during the ongoing pandemic remains our utmost concern, but we also recognize that the health situation and guidance from health authorities has changed. Thus, for the reasons outlined below, we currently do not plan to have a vaccination requirement. We do plan to require masking in conference venues (except when presenting, responding, or actively eating or drinking).

First some background… As you know, last year we required proof of vaccination for attendance and enforced a strict mask requirement in public spaces except where eating and drinking were taking place. These policies complied with recommendations from federal health agencies and city of Chicago requirements. They were also in line with requirements for air travel and entry into the United States. Today, both the city of Boston’s proof of vaccination policy and indoor masking mandates have been lifted. The proof of vaccination requirement for entry into the US has also been lifted. The loosening of vaccination requirements follows the recognition that vaccinations do not prevent the spread of the current dominant COVID variants the same way they did in November 2021 (during last year’s meeting). While masking helps with transmission, masking requirements vary across venues and jurisdictions.

Considering all this, ASOR has decided to drop the proof of vaccination requirement, while strongly advising and encouraging vaccination. All ASOR staff will be vaccinated. We also note that this decision is in line with some (but not all) other societies and organizations.

At the same time, we have decided to maintain a masking policy out of respect for and in consideration of those in the ASOR family who are immunocompromised, who have other health concerns, or who live with those with these concerns. ASOR acknowledges that this masking policy is stricter than CDC or local regulations, and we have received assurances from the Boston Park Plaza that they will comply with this policy in our meeting spaces and venues. We cannot control masking for our attendees or others outside the meeting and exhibit venues.

All of us at ASOR look forward to seeing you in November.

Respectfully,

Sharon Herbert and Andy Vaughn

Farsi Translation Sponsored by AIIrS

Farsi Translation Sponsored by AIIrS

Thanks to generous sponsorship from the American Institute of Iranian Studies (AIIrS), ASOR will offer Farsi translation as part of the virtual component of the 2022 Annual Meeting for the Archaeology of Iran session on Sunday, October 23 at 10:00am ET.  View the planned program for Archaeology of Iran (Virtual) here.

In addition to Farsi translation, the sponsorship will help support the meeting participation fees of Iranian paper and poster presenters.

ASOR is continuously working on ways to increase participation by making the Annual Meeting more inclusive and accessible to those who would not otherwise be able to attend. By limiting financial and language barriers, we hope that a greater number of scholars in Iran will be able to participate.

We invite members to recommend Iranian colleagues who would be interested in attending the virtual session. Please send your recommendations to Arlene Press at meetings@asor.org and include the scholar’s full name, professional affiliation, and their email address.

2021 ANNUAL MEETING: CHICAGO AND VIRTUAL

CHICAGO: NOVEMBER 17-20
VIRTUAL: DECEMBER 9-12[/vc_column_text][mk_divider][vc_column_text]ASOR’s 2021 Annual Meeting will have both in-person and virtual components. The in-person component will take place November 17-20 at the Hilton Chicago in downtown Chicago. The virtual component will take place online December 9-12.

ASOR members may propose sessions and workshops for either or both components through January 15.  The proposal form and full details can be found in the 2021 Call for Member-Organized Session and Workshop Proposals. The Call for Papers will be open from February 15 to March 15 and members can choose to if they would like to submit their research for in-person presentation in Chicago or for the virtual component.

Registration is open and one rate will give you access to both components.

Scholarships are available: Due to COVID-19, and thanks to ASOR’s generous members, all current ASOR members with a need may request a 25%, 50%, or full scholarship for annual meeting registration. E-mail programs@asor.org with requests. We are committed to meeting 100% of requests from members. We will do our best to meet requests from non-members.

Meeting safely and providing diverse and inclusive options for participation are our top priorities. Our 2020 Virtual Annual Meeting showed us that it is possible provide an online platform for global scholars to connect, engage, and share their research. We are committed to expanding our online resources and look forward to continuing this work as part of the 2021 Annual Meeting.

We look forward to meeting together in Chicago this November and to seeing you online in December!
