POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AT THE COTSEN INSTITUTE

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, UCLA, Los Angeles, California, announces a postdoctoral position for the academic year, 2014-15, to begin September 1, 2014. We are seeking a recent Ph.D. in archaeology or any field related to archaeology (anthropology, art history, history, or area studies such as Classics, Near Eastern Studies, etc.) with a research project and/or methodological specialization that complements resources at the Cotsen Institute, such as paleo-environmental studies, historical archaeology, early complex Old World societies, or any area of Asian studies.

The position will be funded for a period of one year [10 months], and will include benefits.

Qualifications: This position is for a recipient of a recent Ph.D. degree, earned between 2011 and 2014 (degree date by June 30, 2014).

Applicants should submit a cover letter describing their research goals and how they would pursue them in a year at the Cotsen Institute, along with a current CV (including names of 3 referees to be contacted). Applicants should also design and submit a short proposal for a graduate seminar (for a 10-week UCLA quarter, to be scheduled at convenience of faculty and students) with suggested readings, topics, etc. that allow UCLA students to explore cultural regions, periods, material culture or methodologies beyond regular, resident offerings.

Candidates must be in residence at UCLA for the full three academic quarters (Sept 2014–June 2015), and should not plan for any extended fieldwork away or other absences during this period.

Applications: Deadline: March 1; review of applications will begin in March, with the intention of making an offer in April. Applicants may be contacted for an online live interview.

Salary: The level of remuneration is dependent on experience.  Current salary range for postdoctoral positions at UCLA is set at $39,264 – $49,884, and may be revised in the future. In addition, health care costs will be provided which increases the remuneration package.

In addition, the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology will reimburse up to $5,000 in research funds for travel, research assistance, or related expenses incurred during the time of appointment, as well as office space and staff support for teaching purposes.

If the successful applicant is a non-U.S. citizen, s/he will need to submit paperwork for a US visa through the Cotsen Institute, and possibly visit a US Embassy or Consulate in country of origin.

Applicants interested in this position should send cover letter and C.V. to: Erika Santoyo, Student Affairs Officer at the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684098866{margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684008271{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

LETTER FROM PRESIDENT SUSAN ACKERMAN ANNOUNCING THAT ASOR QUALIFIES FOR LEGACY GIFT

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

January 31, 2014

We did it!!!

Four months ago, an anonymous ASOR trustee gave ASOR a legacy gift of a transformative nature—its current market value is $475,000. But ASOR was also given a challenge in order to qualify: raise $200,000 from 300 different donors by January 31, 2014. Today, we’re thrilled to announce that we did it! In fact, we more than “did it”: we raised an astonishing $258,775—29% over our goal—with donations from 321 of ASOR’s devoted members and friends.

Truth be told, just two weeks ago, I wasn’t so sure that we would make it. On January 15, we had received contributions from only 199 donors, considerably fewer than the 300 we needed, and even by January 24, one week before the deadline, we still needed 79 more people to give. It wasn’t looking good. But I never should have doubted. You—our members, our associates, and our friends—care deeply about ASOR, and when we needed your help, you were right there.

And I really mean “right there.” One night, I e-mailed one of you at 6:33 pm, and by 8:23, you had given a donation. That same night, late, I sent an e-mail to another potential donor; by the next morning, there was a gift. Every member of our Board of Trustees stepped forward to help us meet this challenge, as did every chair of our several standing committees. Many, many of our committee members, our annual meeting session chairs, and the editors of our various publications–people who already give so much to ASOR in terms of their time and effort–gave generously from their pocketbooks as well. And over and over, when you wrote to me agreeing to make a donation, you told me how happy you were to do so, because ASOR meant so much to you–professionally, intellectually, and socially.

So, to all 321 of you, thank you so much, and I know that all of us want also to thank the donor who made the $475,000 gift that set us forth on this challenge in the first place. Not only is the gift itself transformative—and we can all now begin to dream about the future for ASOR that it will make possible—but in meeting the challenge with which the gift came, we have been transformed, as we have been called to be the best we can be: a community of loyal and dedicated members, associates, and friends who share a deep and abiding commitment to our extraordinary organization.

With profound gratitude,
Susan Ackerman

2014 CALL FOR PAPERS

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]ASOR’s Annual Meeting Program Committee solicits papers from scholars seeking to present their research and new discoveries at the 2014 Annual Meeting. The updated Call for Papers now includes newly approved Member-Organized Sessions. Abstracts of 250 words or less should be submitted via ASOR’s online abstract submission system.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is February 15, 2014.

The Program Committee has worked hard to develop a diverse offering of academic sessions, which includes the following formats:

  • ASOR Sessions for the presentation of new research in the broad temporal, regional, and disciplinary areas represented in the ASOR membership
  • Member-Organized Sessions that explore a specific topic or theme proposed by members
  • Workshop Sessions developed around a tightly focused topic and designed to be interactive with substantive discussion
  • Projects on Parade poster session as a less formal venue for presenting research (abstract submissions will be accepted starting June 2014)

For those who would like to present papers, please make sure to review the guidelines for Abstract Submissions before submitting abstracts for review. Professional membership in ASOR and registration for the Annual Meeting are required at the time of abstract submission (directions will be provided in the confirmation of abstract receipt). Abstracts will not be reviewed until first authors of the papers have registered for the meeting. Should an abstract not be accepted, the registration fee can be refunded.
This year’s meeting will be held at The Westin San Diego from November 19th – 22nd.

More information about registration, travel, and accommodations can be found here.

Please contact LeeAnn Barnes Gordon, ASOR’s Manager of Programs and Events, with any questions or comments.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684098866{margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684008271{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
