EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING

Washington, D. C.
October 4, 2015
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Every fall, the Executive Committee of the ASOR Board of Trustees meets to conduct business on behalf of the larger Board, especially matters that have arisen since the full Board of Trustees meeting in the spring. Most important, the Executive Committee receives a report from the ASOR Treasurer that summarizes how ASOR’s finances fared during the recently ended fiscal year. In this case, ASOR Treasurer presented the Executive Committee with a report on ASOR’s financial picture for Fiscal Year 2015, which ended June 30, 2015.

I am pleased to report that the financial news is very good. While the final figures are not yet in (we are waiting for the results of our FY 2015 audit), ASOR ended the year with a net income of about $18,000, far better than the $1,300 that we were projecting when the Board reviewed the FY 2015 budget in April. ASOR’s investments accounts – the Fellowship Accounts and the Endowment Accounts – also performed well during FY 2015, with our Fellowship Accounts posting a gain of 5.8% and the Endowment Accounts posting a gain of 5.4%. Overall, the total market value of our investment accounts showed a 7.12% increase.

The Executive Committee also heard the very good news that ASOR’s one-year cooperative agreement with the U. S. Department of State had been extended for a second year, and that the previous year’s funding of $750,000 had been increased to $900,000. This extension, and the enhanced funding, will allow the program, now known as ASOR’s Cultural Heritage Initiatives—Planning for Safeguarding Heritage Sites in Syria and Iraq, to continue its work of documenting comprehensively the current condition of cultural heritage sites in Syria and portions of Iraq; to assess future restoration, preservation, and protection needs; and to raise global awareness of the threats to cultural heritage while also implementing future projects and providing immediate assistance within the region.

In addition, the Executive Committee heard a report about a National Endowment for the Humanities grant of $30,000 that has been jointly awarded to ASOR and the AIA. The purpose of this grant is to help fund a two-day conference on December 10-11 in Washington, D.C., which will bring together different organizations that, like ASOR, are working on issues concerning cultural heritage in Syria and northern Iraq, to ask how we might encourage collaboration among these organizations and direct our efforts so that we best complement (rather than duplicate) each other’s work.

The Executive Committee was also able to discuss some new ASOR initiatives: for example, plans for the redesign of the ASOR website. In addition, the Executive Committee met with members of the ASOR Strategic Planning Task Force to discuss the Task Force’s progress in crafting a Strategic Plan for ASOR for 2016-2020 (building on our current Strategic Plan, which covers the period 2011-2015). The Strategic Planning Task Force expects to have more to report on its progress in November, both to the ASOR Board of Trustees and to the membership at large. Stay tuned![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684098866{margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684008271{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

ASOR Media Note—For Immediate Release

CULTURAL HERITAGE INITIATIVES: PLANNING FOR SAFEGUARDING HERITAGE SITES IN SYRIA & IRAQ

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) is pleased to announce that, with a $900,000 extension to our previous one-year cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of State, the ASOR Syrian Heritage Initiative team will be able to continue its work of documenting comprehensively the current condition of cultural heritage sites in Syria and portions of Iraq and to assess future restoration, preservation, and protection needs. Now known as ASOR’s Cultural Heritage Initiatives—Planning for Safeguarding Heritage Sites in Syria and Iraq, this program will continue to raise global awareness of the threats to cultural heritage while also implementing future projects and providing immediate assistance within the region. ASOR’s Cultural Heritage Initiatives Program is led by five principal investigators: Michael Danti (ASOR, Academic Director), Andrew Vaughn (ASOR, Administrative Director), Scott Branting (University of Central Florida), Jesse Casana (Dartmouth College), and Abdalrazzaq Moaz (University of Bonn and ASOR). Allison Cuneo, LeeAnn Barnes Gordon, and Susan Penacho serve as Project Managers for their respective program units. The international team also includes more than 30 additional scholars and specialists who will serve as co-investigators, consultants, or advisors.

In its first year, ASOR’s Cultural Heritage Initiatives produced a total of 46 Weekly Reports and 312 Incident Reports (90 for Iraq and 222 for Syria) and inventoried a total of 11,853 sites in the region (8,979 for Syria and 2,874 for Iraq). We completed rapid initial assessments to identify damage using satellite imagery  of 4,732 sites in Syria. Subsequently, we produced detailed assessments of more than a quarter of those sites. The team also completed more than 300 comprehensive condition assessments for cultural heritage sites in Syria and Iraq by combining satellite imagery analysis and weekly reporting data,. Additionally, team members published or submitted for publication several op-ed, popular, and peer-reviewed articles on the cultural heritage crisis in the conflict zone, and ASOR’s Cultural Heritage Initiatives were featured in over 50 news stories, including newspapers, magazines, radio broadcasts, live television, and live webcasts. The ASOR team also received support from the J. M. Kaplan Fund and in-kind support from the Getty Conservation Institute, The World Monuments Fund, and Arnold and Porter, LLC.

The United States is committed to protecting cultural heritage from pillage, looting, and illicit trafficking around the world, and the cooperative agreement between the U.S. Department of State and ASOR is part of a larger U.S. Department of State effort to preserve the historic sites and treasures in Syria and Iraq. Destruction of this region’s rich history threatens a cultural legacy of universal importance and jeopardizes the role heritage can play in post-conflict reconciliation and economic revitalization efforts. ASOR, founded in 1900 and currently located at Boston University, is the preeminent organization of archaeologists and historians who initiate, encourage and support research into, and public understanding of, the cultures and history of the Near East. The cooperative agreement between ASOR and the Department of State is jointly managed by ASOR (www.asor.org) and the Office of Press and Public Diplomacy of the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and the Cultural Heritage Center of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). AIA & ASOR RECEIVE NEH CHAIRMAN’S GRANT TO SUPPORT A CULTURAL HERITAGE SUMMIT

Media Release
October 8, 2015
For Immediate Distribution
[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][mk_image src=”http://www.asor.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/aia-asor-logo.png” image_width=”480″ image_height=”282″ crop=”false” hover=”false”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) and American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) announced today that they have jointly received a Chairman’s Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to support a two-day invitational summit in Washington, D.C., on December 10–11, 2015. During the summit, representatives from organizations engaged in collecting data on the cultural heritage of Syria will agree upon ways to cooperate and reduce duplication of effort. NEH Chairman William “Bro” Adams will be in attendance for the public event to be held on Friday, December 11, at the National Geographic Society.

This is an urgent matter. Every day, sites and buildings in Syria are being damaged or destroyed by conflict, looting, and terrorism. Moreover, industrial-scale looting has resulted in the theft of artifacts that are then sold to support ISIL and other terrorist groups. Dozens of non-profit organizations and non-governmental organizations have responded to this crisis, and some of them have received significant funding from European countries, Canada, UNESCO, and the United States. In just the past three weeks, cultural heritage conferences held at the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Asia Society have called for all working on this problem to find ways to achieve a division of labor and greater collaboration. The goal of this summit is to do just that. ASOR and the AIA are pleased that NEH Chairman Adams has responded to this need by sponsoring this conference and agreeing to participate.

Details on the summit and the public symposium to be held at the National Geographic Society on Friday, December 11, will be announced in the coming weeks. For further information, please contact ASOR at 617-353-6570 or asor@bu.edu or the AIA at 617-353-9362 or abenbow@aia.bu.edu.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684098866{margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684008271{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
