2013 SPRING BOARD MEETING

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The ASOR, AIAR, and CAARI boards met in Indianapolis, IN over the weekend of April 19-21, 2013. One of the highlights of the weekend was a gala celebration honoring P. E. MacAllister’s service to ASOR on the occasion of his transition from Board Chair to Chairman Emeritus. Previous issues of News@ASOR have covered the celebration, and the present article presents a summary of the action items and reports from the ASOR Executive Committee and Board Meetings. The minutes of both meetings as well as the minutes from previous meetings are found on the ASOR website.

Summary of action items and other reports from the Spring 2013 Executive Committee and Board Meetings:

  • Election of a New President of ASOR: Susan Ackerman was unanimously elected to the position of ASOR President for a term beginning January 1, 2014 and continuing through December 31, 2106. Ackerman’s election followed an extensive search led the Officers’ Nominating Committee (chaired by Gary Arbino.)
  • Trustee Nominations: Committee Chair Beth Alpert Nakhai reported that there will be a number of vacancies this year with incumbent trustees choosing not to stand for reelection. She encouraged ASOR members to consider serving in this capacity and reminded all trustees of the trustee pledge.
  • Executive Committee Actions (Not Brought to the Whole Board): The Executive Committee voted to extend Andrew Vaughn’s contract as Executive Director for one year (through June 30, 2016) with a 3% raise for the 2014 Fiscal Year. The EC voted to accept the recommendation of the Executive Director with regards to a severance request from Kelley Herlihy. Finally, the EC charged President Tim Harrison with the task of developing language to ammend the bylaws to create a standing personnel committee and to report back at the September EC meeting.
  • Finance Committee Report: Treasurer Richard Coffman reports that ASOR should have another balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2013. Investments are doing well, and the Endowment Account is $67,000 higher than last year. The Board accepted unanimously the Finance Committee Report and voted unanimously to approve the budget for Fiscal Year 2014.
  • Foundational Campaign Report: President Tim Harrison that ASOR is on target to reach 350 donors for Fiscal Year 2013 (July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013.) The total raised to date for the fiscal year is $320,000. For the three-year campaign (ends June 30, 2014), ASOR has reached $834,000 with $1.3 million as the goal. We are on target, but the hardest work remains. President Harrison called on all trustees and ASOR members to help us reach our goal.
  • Election of Committee Members and CCC Report: The board voted unanimously to accept the recommendation of the Program Committee that the following people be elected to the Program Committee for a three-year term (Class of 2015): Asa Eger, Stephanie Langham Hooper, and Geoff Emberling. ASOR Vice President and chair of the Chairs Coordinating Council reported that the CCC would be holding a retreat in Detroit the following weekend.
  • Membership Report (Jennie Ebeling): Jennie reported that ASOR reach a high of 1,600 in March and currently has 1,523 members versus 1,511 at this time last year. The Social Media initiatives have been extremely successful. The Facebook page has over 5,000 likes, and the ASOR Blog has 12,000 unique visitors each month. The Membership Committee is contributing articles to News@ASOR and soliciting articles from the membership and ther committees.
  • Status of Women Report (Beth Alpert Nakhai): Beth reported that a formal steering committee and a presence on the ASOR website have been developed. A luncheon is planned for Saturday at the Annual Meeting, and there are initiatives underway to provide mentoring for women in the field. The committee is working with the ASOR office on mapping and research projects. The committee is also exploring ways to create a scholarship in the name of Prof. Mary Inda Hussey, an early female ASOR leader.
  • Friends of ASOR Initiative and Webinar Initiative: The Board heard a report from Andy Vaughn and Stevan Dana on the Friends of ASOR program, the monthly e-newsletter The Ancient Near East Today, and a webinar initiative. The board voted unanimously to charge the CCC to “put into place the structures and functions necessary to get a webinar program up and running by September 10, 2013.” [See the Webinar Announcement in the September News@ASOR.]
  • Reports from the Research Centers: The Board received reports from ACOR, AIAR, and CAARI. (See the minutes posted online.)
  • President’s Report: Tim Harrison commented that ASOR has successfully been through a transition of leadership that would culminate with Susan Ackerman becoming President in January 2014. He mentioned a new Board Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and President. He observed that a successful transition was a sign of a healthy ASOR. Lynn Swartz Dodd then presented a summary of the work of the Ethics Policy Task Force. Tim called on Susan Ackerman to say a few words, and she made a statement about the state of ASOR and indicated that she took this job based on her confidence in ASOR which is a tremendous tribute to the leadership of our President, Executive Director and Board Chairman.
  • Chair’s Report: P. E. MacAllister presented incoming Board Chair, B. W. Ruffner, with a gavel and made a charge to Ruffner citing Ezekiel. MacAllister then presented tokens of appreciation to Past Treasurer (Sheldon Fox) and Past Secretary (Jim Strange) for their service to ASOR. MacAllister concluded his report with a reflection on the history of ASOR an his involvement (previously published in News@ASOR.)

P. E. MACALLISTER AND ASOR

Remarks by Eric M. Meyers at the Gala Dinner Announcing the Establishment of The P.E. MacAllister Endowed Scholarship Fund For Archaeological Volunteers
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]When we think of what has happened in the Middle East these past 40 years or so when P.E. was either on the Board of ASOR or chairman of it, we marvel at the fact that both P.E. and ASOR have survived the cataclysmic events that have rocked that region time and time again and affected ASOR and its overseas institutes, the Albright in Jerusalem, ACOR in Amman, Jordan, and CAARI in Nicosia, Cyprus: The Yom Kippur War in 1973, The Turkish invasion of Cyprus in July of 1974, two Iraq wars in 1991 and 2003, two intifadas and continuing unrest in the Palestinian Authority and Israel, the Gaza War, the current chaos in Syria that has spilled over to neighboring regions, and the aftermath of the so-called Arab Spring. And this is by no means an exhaustive list of what has happened during these years. All of this has been happening while ASOR continued to flourish and put before the public and the scholarly world of Near Eastern Studies and archaeology amazing discoveries from each of the countries where ASOR has worked including Iraq, Tunisia, Syria, and Turkey where we do not have local research institutes. Some of us even were fortunate enough to talk about those discoveries on P.E.’s local TV show, right from the heartland here in Indianapolis.

P.E.’s enthusiasm for history and archaeology is infectious and all of us who have listened to him on the Board when he spoke of historical episodes from which he could draw a parallel that would resonate with ASOR‘s present concerns, we all took pride in his words and wished our best students could have heard P.E. hold forth. His use of historical analogy has provided all of us in ASOR with a valuable pedagogical tool that is helpful in the classroom and in our not-for-profit work. Because ASOR’s mission is to explore the past and present it to the public and P.E.’s passion for that subject overlapped so well, we were a perfect match, ASOR and P.E. MacAllister. All the chaos of Middle East politics and unrest could not detract from ASOR’s quest to uncover from the ancient past in the Near East the secrets long buried underground that might help us better understand the present, and not just in that region but worldwide. P.E. guided us through those years with a steady hand and a singular purpose and ASOR not only survived but prospered in those challenging years. While ASOR, which was founded in 1900, was once a unified single entity with programs in different countries, first Palestine, then Iraq, and so on, ultimately wars and local politics forced a unified ASOR to reorganize and take those differences into consideration and somehow redefine itself in relation to the overseas institutes in a new way. P.E. and I as president alongside him, were a part of that process and P.E.’s business acumen, common sense, and historical insights enabled ASOR to get through a very difficult period in its history. ASOR ceded the Jerusalem property to the Albright, weaned the overseas institutes from its annual subventions, and redefined ASOR so that it became what it is today, the preeminent society for sponsoring American archaeological excavations and surveys, for promoting scholarship in the basic languages, cultural histories and traditions of the Near Eastern world, and outlet for the timely dissemination of research results in Near Eastern studies disciplines in published form and on the web.

Let me tell just one story to illustrate what sort of man we are talking about when it comes to matters of history or ASOR. A number of years ago, just as the ASOR Archive Project was getting launched with a major grant from the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH), I received a call from a gentleman in a retirement home in Florida claiming to have a large cache of old photographs of the Holy Land that were left to him years ago by a distant relative and that he would like to sell. I asked him to describe over the phone what kind of pictures they were and in what sort of condition they were and he began by saying some were from Jerusalem and other places like Nazareth, and that they dated to the 19th century. His distant relative had somehow been associated with a project to photograph the Holy Land and the negatives were generally well preserved and were stored in a brass shell casing and were rolled inside it. I began to get excited and asked him to send a few digital images to me to be sure I knew what they were and if they were valuable and I asked him to promise not to sell them to anyone till ASOR had chance to evaluate them and bid for them.

Well when those digital images arrived I called Rachel Hallote my colleague in archives and told her about it and we tentatively identified them as the missing negatives of the first photographic expedition of the American Palestine Exploration Society, ASOR’s predecessor organization founded in the 1870’s and conducted in the year 1875—the rest of the negatives were in the possession of the Palestine Exploration Fund in London. The photographer was Trancrede Dumas of Beirut who was accompanied by Americans throughout the photographic journey. I had a sense of what these photos were worth, and I called P.E., at that time Chairman of the Board. As it turned out P.E. was in Florida, and he knew the retirement community. P.E. said that he would drive over and have a look at them. Next thing I knew, ASOR was in possession of this priceless collection of photographs, which were restored under the NEH grant and mounted on the web; and most recently they have been published by ASOR in an Annual in 2012 along with the PEF photos to complete the collection, and the volume is dedicated to P.E. MacAllister. This collection of photos supplements rather nicely the original permit or “firman” of the first APES expedition in 1873 to Palestine and signed by the Ottoman Sultan and ornately decorated and written in Turkish language in Arabic script, discovered as part of the ASOR archive project at the Harvard Semitic museum. This large item is now hanging in the ASOR offices in Boston on the BU campus and has been restored and replicas made under the same NEH grant. This rare group of holdings is just one of many examples I could provide of how P.E. has allowed ASOR to do the right thing and prosper with his generosity and wisdom.

So as we progress now in hearing a series of testimonials in P.E.’s honor let us all think about what we have learned from him, from his words written or spoken, or by his example in the many causes that he has supported. Herodotus the Greek historian, who is known as the “father of history,” was also known for his love of life and broad-mindedness. He believed that Greeks could learn a lot from the people around them, and so Herodotus wrote about many other cultures, some of which he also visited, such as the Egyptians and the Scythians. He wrote a great deal and a few lines of his remind me of the person we honor tonight: “The only good is knowledge, and the only evil is ignorance.” He also wrote: “The most hateful human misfortune is for a wise man to have no influence.” We in ASOR have been fortunate to have had P.E. MacAllister influence our work for decades, and we will never forget him.

Toast to P.E. MacAllister made by Eric M. Meyers

After all the accolades and speeches, all of us surely get the message that history matters. Our teacher whom we honor today is our beloved mentor, P.E. MacAllister. If I were to sum up what he has meant to ASOR and to all of us who have spent time with him these past years, I would quote Cicero who wrote:

“To remain ignorant of things that happened before you is to remain a child.”

That is the essence of the man MacAllister, and that is the essence of ASOR which for 113 years has been bringing to the fore the lessons of the ancient and modern Middle East: birthplace of writing, birthplace of science and astronomy, birthplace of urbanism, birthplace of law, birthplace of three Abrahamic religions, and region of untold numbers of some of the most important architectural monuments of the past, many now in danger of destruction by war. We salute our chair for all the wisdom and generosity he has shown to ASOR and so many others.

Robert Browning wrote in his famous poem in honor of the famed rabbi of the 12th century who was a poet, mathematician, astronomer, and renowned grammarian of Hebrew, Rabbi Ben Ezra:

“Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be, the last of life for which the first was
made…Our times are in His (God’s) hand.”

We raise our glasses to P.E. and say after me: “May you live to be as old as Moses!”

The above remarks and toast were given by Eric M. Meyers

ASOR HONORS P. E. MACALLISTER WITH GALA DINNER AND ANNOUNCES ESTABLISHMENT OF MACALLISTER ENDOWMENT

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]On April 20, 2013, the ASOR family gathered in Indianapolis to honor one of its most loyal and generous members, P. E. MacAllister, with a gala dinner and with the announcement of an endowed scholarship fund bearing the MacAllister name (see below for a tabula honorarium of donors). No one has equaled his support of ASOR in the last century, and his leadership as board chair has been unparalled as well. Mr. MacAllister served as ASOR’s Board Chairman for 19 years and has been on the ASOR Board for more than 37 years. He has steered ASOR through financially difficult times, and he transitions to Chairman Emeritus with ASOR in solid financial shape and carrying out our mission like never before. (See Mr. MacAllister’s “An ASOR Valediction” from his last board meeting as Board Chairman.)

Past ASOR President Eric Meyers summarized well the significance of these four decades during his remarks to everyone gathered at the gala dinner (click here for Meyers’ complete remarks): “When we think of what has happened in the Middle East these past 40 years or so when P.E. was either on the Board of ASOR or chairman of it, we marvel at the fact that both P.E. and ASOR have survived the cataclysmic events that have rocked that region time and time again and affected ASOR and its overseas institutes, the Albright in Jerusalem, ACOR in Amman, Jordan, and CAARI in Nicosia, Cyprus: The Yom Kippur War in 1973, The Turkish invasion of Cyprus in July of 1974, two Iraq wars in 1991 and 2003, two intifadas and continuing unrest in the Palestinian Authority and Israel, the Gaza War, the current chaos in Syria that has spilled over to neighboring regions, and the aftermath of the so-called Arab Spring. And this is by no means an exhaustive list of what has happened during these years. All of this has been happening while ASOR continued to flourish and put before the public and the scholarly world of Near Eastern Studies and archaeology amazing discoveries from each of the countries where ASOR has worked including Iraq, Tunisia, Syria, and Turkey where we do not have local research institutes.”

It was with a sincere feeling of gratitude that the boards of ASOR, AIAR, and CAARI met in Indianapolis over April 19-21, 2013 so that all of our organizations could be on hand for this festive event. On Saturday evening (April 20), almost 100 friends and family (including Indiana Gov. Mike Pence) gathered at the Skyline Club for a gala dinner where we thanked Mr. MacAllister for his service and leadership to ASOR. The event began with a welcome reception where ASOR friends, the MacAllister family, and friends from Indianapolis were able to share stories and get to know each other. The remarks and toasts (and roasts) by past ASOR Presidents Eric Meyers and Joe Seger gave Indianapolis friends a sense of how much P.E. has meant to ASOR. Current ASOR President Tim Harrison, President Elect Susan Ackerman, and Board Chair Elect B. W. Ruffner shared how P.E.’s leadership has been unparalled in ASOR and how much we have appreciated him. There were also special comments from Bob Massie (a close friend of P.E.’s from Indianapolis who is also an ASOR Trustee). While he was unable to attend in person, a statement was read from former ASOR Trustee Edward F. Campbell—the person who invited P.E. to join the ASOR community in 1968 and the ASOR Board in 1976. The night would not have been complete without a stirring address filled with historical references from the honoree himself, Mr. P.E. MacAllister. Last, but certainly not least, Gov. Mike Pence surprised P.E. and the rest of the audience by arriving just in time to make the concluding comments and a toast. Gov. Pence identified Mr. MacAllister as the person who had been most influencial in his political career, and said that he would not have become governor without him! It was truly an elegant and special evening, and Gov. Pence’s address was the perfect summation and ending.

The event also marked the public announcement of the establishment of the P.E. MacAllister Endowed Scholarship Fund for Archaeological Volunteers (see below for a tabula honorarium of Donors). Past ASOR Treasurer Sheldon Fox made the official announcement; he reported that P.E.’s friends and family had given over $100,000 to establish a fund that will allow students to go on excavations in perpetuity. P.E. has been passionate in supporting students in their archaeological fieldwork, and he has been instrumental in raising support for ASOR to award 243 excavation scholarships and grants from 2007 to 2013. It is truly fitting that the ASOR family, the MacAllister family, and P. E.’s Indianapolis friends chose to honor and recognize him with an endowment fund that supports student who volunteers on excavations.

A Brief ASOR Biography of P. E. MacAllister:

P.E. MacAllister became engaged in ASOR in 1968 and has been a member of the ASOR Board of Trustees since 1976. He has served as Chairman of the Board since 1994. This occasion celebrates more than 40 years of MacAllister leadership in ASOR and parallels the 40 years that David served as king of United Monarchy is Israel (1010-970 BCE). The Bible remarks that the youthful David was a handsome man of ruddy complexion; and our beloved P.E. as a nonagenarian exudes a similar beauty and enthusiasm, to say nothing of great wisdom. He has helped ASOR survive periods of great challenge, including when ASOR was supporting the overseas institutes. And we won’t even mention the number of Middle East wars that occurred during his tenure. During these four decades and more, thanks to P.E., ASOR has maintained its position as the preeminent organization that places the history and culture of the ancient Near East before the public in publications and in its archeological field projects. The MacAllister Endowment for Archaeological Volunteers now ensures that his name will forever be associated with ASOR (see below for the tabula honorarium).

P.E.’s advice during both good times and tough ones was always filtered through the lens of history and studded with parallels from the business world or sports community. He might turn to ancient Greece or to the Bible or even to Napoleon to inspire ASOR Board members to rise to a challenge. And at times he would turn to Hoosier history or the Indianapolis Colts for lessons that might help ASOR explore more effectively the world of the ancient Near East, a world that produced the Bible and three of the great world religions. It was always through the voices of the past that P.E. allowed his own voice to be heard.

In honoring P.E. with the gala event and with this endowment, ASOR and its friends, here and abroad, reaffirm the belief that recovering the past through archaeology and the study of ancient literary sources can make a huge difference in our understanding of who we are today, and that, friends, can and will continue to make a difference to our community and culture.

A Plaudit to P. E MacAllister

On His Elevation to Status as ASOR Board Chairman Emeritus

A plaudit here to tonight’s honoree
A remarkable friend and colleague is he
Its Indy we know that he’s considered a saint in
More durable it seems than even Peyton
He puts lie to the lingo that Billie Joel sung
In hyping that “only the good die young”.
As management mogul of major proportion
He’s effectively guided his business’s fortunes
Not only is he a plus octogenarian
He’s also a dedicated humanitarian
A student of history, of its stories old,
Embracing those lessons that need to be told
And though he can’t sing like Domingo or Carreras
He’s nourished our souls by support of O-per-as
A man of faith, and of grace and of dignity
What more, dare we ask, could we want him to be?

So we’ve come here today and are making a fuss
Not only because he’s a generous cuss
But of course he is that! and we’ll never forget it
For all that he’s done he deserves lots of credit.
He has well honored ASOR from the depths of our digs
As a genial compadre in support of our gigs
And so we most proudly now, as exemplar in veritas
Declare him henceforth ASOR Board Chair Emeritus

In similar mean we too want to make clear
And ensure that his memory will always be near
And honor his spirit of kind generosity
By establishing the means to continue his legacy
So thus we this day do declare, set forth, and declaim
A Fellowship Fund Endowment bearing his name
MacAllister Fellowships thus will henceforth in our nation
Provide dig opportunities for a new generation
In truth no constraints could have made us do other
To honor our long cherished, well beloved brother
Joe D. Seger, ASOR Past President

ASOR AWARDS 55 EXCAVATION SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS IN 2013

243 Total Awards Since 2007
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Despite the continuing tough economic climate, ASOR has once again maintained our commitment to providing scholarships, grants, and fellowships for students and scholars. Our numbers for summer field scholarships and excavation grants reached an all-time record this year with 55 awards for the summer of 2013. ASOR’s donors (see the Fiscal Year 2013 Development Report) played a crucial role in making sure that these important scholarships could be given. The feedback that we received from students indicated that these funds made the difference in their participation. We were amazed at how many students told us they would not have been able to particpate in a field season without this scholarship.

Once again, the 2013-2014 academic year appears to be a challenging one in terms of grant funding, so the gifts and contributions of donors will be greatly appreciated. We have set a goal of increasing our support by 10 awards and providing 65 field scholarships and excavation grants for 2014. We will need your help to make this happen, and we hope that you will join ASOR donors from last year (see the Fiscal Year 2013 Honor Roll of Donors.) Please contact ASOR executive director, Andy Vaughn, if you would like more information on how you can help with scholarships or excavation grants.

ASOR 2013 ANNUAL MEETING REMINDERS AND DEADLINES

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The 2013 ASOR Annual Meeting will take place from Nov. 20-23, 2013 in Baltimore, Maryland. Last year we had 921 attendees, and this year we expect that number rise to 1,000. We hope that you will check out the schedule of events, and we also ask that you keep in mind the following deadlines related to the Annual Meeting:

  • Ongoing: Rooms at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center are almost sold out! As of August 10th, only 3 rooms remained for the peak nights (Thursday and Friday). Book your room now!
  • September 6: Applications for student travel grants are due.
  • September 12: Supersaver rates end; all rates go up $25 on this day.
  • September 15: Nominations for book awards are due.

FISCAL YEAR 2013 DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

We did it (once again)! This past fiscal year (ended June 30) ASOR surpassed our ambitious goal of 350 individual contributors. This is a very significant step as we make progress on our Foundational Campaign. Thanks to 352 separate donors (see the FY13 Honor Roll of Donors), ASOR had a banner year in which more than one in five ASOR members made a charitable contribution over and above the membership dues that already support our important work. We were also successful in terms of total dollars raised ($350,000 in cash gifts in FY13 compared to $196,000 in FY12 and $160,000 in FY11). ASOR also received over $80,000 in-kind contributions during FY13. The success is even more dramatic when we compare ourselves to other learned societies. Many other societies consider themselves successful if they reach a 1-in-50 ratio for gifts by members. As Development Committee Chair Rob Oden articulates so well in his article on why every gift matters, ASOR’s high participation rate is extremely indicative of the support and engagement of our membership. The small and medium gifts literally multiply when combined with other gifts. These gifts also demonstrate to donors contemplating making large gifts that ASOR is an organization worthy of their consideration.

We are particularly grateful to Stevan Dana, the Lanier Theological Library, and P. E. MacAllister, who all made transformative gifts of more $20,000. Google, Inc. and Boston University each made in-kind contributions of more than $20,000. Eight additional people and foundations made leadership gifts of $10,000 or more, and a total of 63 donors gave $1,000 or more. As you can see, ASOR benefits from a pyramid of supporters; each gift (no matter the size) is meaningful and a part of the reason for our success.

Every year ASOR members ask us why we need an annual fund. The answer is simple: we would not be able to accomplish our mission without both memberships and charitable gifts. Memberships and subscriptions are extremely important and account for about 37% of our annual budget. Donations enable ASOR to give more scholarships, do public outreach, enhance our journals and other publications, and improve our online presence.

The following is a partial list of what your membership and donation dollars have enabled us to accomplish together:

  • Expanded the annual page count of BASOR by 25%
  • Moved BASOR to full color and the journal was completely redesigned
  • Launched an outreach e-newsletter, titled The Ancient Near East Today and the Friends of ASOR program through the assistance of trustee Stevan Dana and the Lanier Theological Library
  • Launched a new member-oriented e-newsletter (News@ASOR) with the assistance of the Kershaw Family Trust
  • Awarded 41 travel scholarships to students to participate in fieldwork
  • Awarded 14 small grants to excavation teams to help them with their summer projects
  • Awarded 3 complete scholarships to enable one scholar from Iran and two scholars from Jordan to attend the Annual Meeting
  • Awarded 15 travel scholarships to help students attend the Annual Meeting
  • Our individual membership grew to almost 1,600 (dramatically up from 1,050 seven years ago)
  • Established a new endowed scholarship fund in honor of Board Chair Emeritus P. E. MacAllister
  • Qualified for $20,000 in challenge gifts by reaching 250 separate donors by December 31, 2012
  • Qualified for a $5,000 challenge gift from the Kershaw Family Trust by reaching 350 separate donors for the fiscal year
  • Our endowment accounts (for operations and scholarships) have grown from $750,000 in 2007 to over $1,100,000 today in spite of some turbulent years in the stock market
  • Through the partnership of the Dorot Foundation, awarded the prestigious Aviram Prize ($2,500) to help advance the career of a junior scholar
  • Awarded the prestigious Mesopotamian Fellowship as well as scholarships for Mesopotamian scholars to attend the Annual Meeting
  • Expanded and enhanced our Archives collections to enable better online access (with the generous assistance of the David Berg Foundation and the Lanier Theological Library)
  • Rescued hundreds of glass negatives containing images of early Christian manuscripts with the assistance of The Foundation on Judaism and Christian Origins
  • Began a new digital archives project with the assistance of the David Berg Foundation to make ASOR’s Nelson Glueck collection more accessible online
  • Published four books and site reports in the last year
  • Continued to publish NEA, JCS, and BASOR on time, and continued to maintain and increase their quality
  • All of our journals are now available online through the JSTOR Current Scholarship Program
  • Held our largest Annual Meeting ever in Chicago (over 921 participants and more than 420 papers)
  • Experienced growth in the ASOR Facebook page—grew to more than 6,000 “Likes”
  • Experienced dramatic growth in the readership of the ASOR Blog—more than 12,500 unique visitors per month and more than 1.5 million hits in the last year
  • Partnered with 67 affiliated excavation projects (34 field and 33 publication)
  • Supported the work of our three affiliated research centers in Jerusalem, Amman, and Nicosia.

All of these accomplishments would not have been possible without the support of you, our members. We are especially grateful to the contributors listed in our Fiscal Year 2013 Honor Roll of Donors. Thank you! ASOR will once again be conservative with expenses and spending, but we need your continued participation and partnership. We are poised to move to even greater levels in 2014. While we celebrate all we have accomplished in the last few years, your ongoing partnership and support will help us accomplish our goals in FY14—ASOR’s 114th year.
