2017 PLENARY ADDRESS

“Archaeology, Object History, Art History: Questions of Definition and Discipline.”

The 2017 Plenary Address will be given by Professor Emerita Irene J. Winter, former William Dorr Boardman Professor of Fine Arts, Harvard University.

Born in New York City, Irene Winter received her AB in Anthropology from Barnard College (1960), her MA in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures from the University of Chicago (1967), and her PhD from Columbia University in the History of Art and Archaeology (1973). She taught at Queens College, CUNY, from 1971-1976, at the University of Pennsylvania from 1976-1988, and is presently Boardman Professor of Fine Arts Emerita at Harvard University, having served on the faculty from 1988 to 2009, and as Department Chair from 1993-1996. In 1996-97 she was Slade Professor at Cambridge University, delivering the Slade Lectures in the Spring of 1997. She subsequently delivered the Flexner Lectures at Bryn Mawr College in 1999, and in the Spring of 2005 presented the Andrew H. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts at the National Gallery in Washington DC.

Prof. Winter has participated in archaeological excavations at Godin Tepe and Hasanlu, Iran, and at Tell Sakhariyeh, Iraq, with additional comparative fieldwork in India.  Her awards include a MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship (1983-88), along with an Olivia James travel Grant of the Archaeological Institute of America, and a Samuel H. Kress Foundation Fellowship. She was elected to The American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999, was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study in 2003-4, was named a Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, in 2005, received the Medal of Distinction from Barnard College in 2009, and was designated an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, in 2013, and was recently elected to the American Philosophical Society.

She has served on the Board of the College Art Association, several editorial and grants boards, and the Scientific Committee of the International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East since its inception in 1998. She has also been a member of the Iraq Task Force of the Archaeological Institute of America.

Her principal work has been devoted to the art and archaeology of the Ancient Near East, writing on topics ranging from ivory carving and cylinder seals to royal sculpture. Throughout her career, her stress has been on the relationship between the visual arts, language, history and culture in an attempt to join empirical data with theory in an inter-disciplinary context. Two volumes of collected essays, published by Brill, appeared in 2010, entitled On Art in the Ancient Near East. The Mellon lectures will be published as Visual Affect: Aesthetic Experience and Ancient Mesopotamia.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider divider_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.01)” thickness=”10″ margin_top=”5″ margin_bottom=”5″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1490571214409{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1490225688999{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 30px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

HOTEL RESERVATIONS & CITY INFORMATION

The Westin San Diego
400 W Broadway, San Diego, California
*Please do not confuse this hotel with another Westin hotel only 5 blocks away (The Westin Gaslamp)

UPDATE: ASOR’s block of rooms at The Westin San Diego is sold out and we are managing a wait-list:
If you would like to be added to a wait-list for The Westin San Diego, please e-mail Arlene Press (meetings@asor.org) and specify the nights you would like to stay and what type of room you need (King or 2 double beds). Rooms open regularly due to reservation changes and we will make every effort to find a room for anyone who would like to stay at the conference hotel. If arrangements are made with an overflow hotel, that information will be posted here and shared with those on the wait-list.

IMPORTANT: If you have a reservation in ASOR’s block that you need to modify or cancel, please go through Arlene Press rather than contacting the hotel. This will allow us to reallocate the room to another ASOR attendee on the wait-list.

The 2019 ASOR Annual Meeting will take place at The Westin San Diego, 400 West Broadway, San Diego, CA 92101. The hotel is located downtown and is short walk or trolley ride from the Convention Center, the Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, and the San Diego Zoo, as well as many fine and casual options for dining and shopping.

Reservations: ASOR has negotiated the discounted rate of $159 single/double for rooms at The Westin San Diego.  You are encouraged to make your reservation early as ASOR’s block usually sells out before the meeting. NOTE: The $25/night hotel facilities/resort fee that appears at booking is waived for ASOR attendees with a reservation in ASOR’s group block and will be deducted from the final bill.

Make your reservation online in ASOR’s group block or call the hotel reservations department at 888-627-9033 and reference the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) Annual Meeting.

Room-sharing: If you have a room or need a room that you would like to share at The Westin San Diego, please contact Arlene Press at meetings@asor.org to be placed on the room-share list. We will do our best to identify a potential roommate.

Airport Transportation: The Westin San Diego offers a complimentary airport shuttle daily from 6:00am to 11:00pm. Please contact the hotel at 619-239-4500 for further information.

Parking: Valet parking is available for a daily rate of $50

Dining:
At the The Westin San Diego you can enjoy the contemporary coastal California dishes available for breakfast and lunch at Coast dining room, grab a quick coffee or a light snack at Aroma Cafe, or head to The Bar for a drink and menu selections from Coast.  The hotel is surrounded by a number of fine and casual options for a sit-down meal or quick bite between sessions.

Childcare: Neither ASOR nor The Westin San Diego are in the position to hire or recommend childcare providers. Sitterwise is a local service with vetted childcare providers. They should be booked as far in advance as possible, although 24-hour notice can be accommodated. For more information visit www.sitterwise.com or call 619-303-4379. If you would like to connect with other meeting attendees who are bringing their children to the meeting, please send an e-mail to Arlene Press to be part of a shared google doc.

Special Notice Regarding US Travel Restrictions

ASOR understands that US travel restrictions recently imposed on immigrant and non-immigrant citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen may still be in place in November and that these restrictions may be expanded to other countries in the region, making it impossible for colleagues from these countries to attend the ASOR Annual Meeting.

If you are concerned about registering in advance for the Annual Meeting because of potential travel restrictions, ASOR will work with you to permit registrations at the reduced Early-Bird rate closer to the meeting dates. For more information and/or to make a request, please write to Arlene Press (asormtgs@bu.edu).

Register Online or by Mail

For Students Enrolled at an ASOR Member Institution

If you have any problems receiving the discounted rate, please call ASOR member services at 857-277-0417 or email asormemb@bu.edu. Alternatively, you may complete the printable registration form above and send it to the ASOR office.

Refund Policy

All refunds must be requested in writing by September 15, 2017. A $75 administrative fee will be assessed per registration. Refunds may be processed after the meeting and will be issued by February 14, 2018.

Registration Desk Onsite

The ASOR registration desk will be centrally located at the meeting. All those pre-registered should come to the ASOR registration desk to pick up their name badge and the final meeting program, which will include the abstract book.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider divider_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.01)” thickness=”10″ margin_top=”5″ margin_bottom=”5″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1490571214409{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1490225688999{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 30px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
