ASOR fellowships help students attend their first field school, present posters and papers at the Annual Meeting, conduct fieldwork necessary for their graduate degrees, study collections, and make valuable connections at the Annual Meeting. A full list of fellowship recipients with links to their reports is available here. Every donation provides crucial support for students. In 2019, we awarded $75,200 in funding for excavation and Annual Meeting fellowships. The number of fellowships we offer continues to grow. This year we added a new fellowship-the Steinmetz Fellowship for Active/Reserve Military or Veterans.

The total amount of fellowship money awarded is now over $850,00, thanks to donors like you.

ASOR EXCEEDS PARTICIPATION GOAL OF 450 DONORS

[/vc_column_text][mk_divider][vc_column_text responsive_align=”left”]Our members (i.e., you) are truly amazing. This year we received a extraordinary challenge pledge of $450,000 towards the purchase of the James F. Strange Center, but we had to “earn” this gift by completing two separate challenges:

  • First, we had to demonstrate that we were all behind ASOR’s many initiatives by securing 450 unique donors by June 30, 2019. When we received this challenge on February 1st, we had about 200 donors for the fiscal year, so we had to receive gifts from 250 new donors in just five months. A tall order; yet, our members came through (once again).
  • Second (and separate from the participation goal), we must raise $225,000 in new gifts and pledges for the building by December 31, 2019. To date, we have received gifts and pledges of $171,402 for this challenge—so we only need $53,598 more. Now that we’re completed the participation challenge (see below), we will focus on raising the last $53,500+ that we need to pay off the building debt and exceed our goal.

For now, we are thrilled to announce that we exceeded the participation portion of the challenge. As of July 2nd, we had 461 donors, and we are still waiting for the mail to arrive over the next week with gifts postmarked by June 30th. We set an all-time high for both dollars donated and for participation in Fiscal Year 2019, and we are so thankful for all of your support.[/vc_column_text][mk_divider][vc_line_chart style=”modern” x_values=”FY2011; FY2012; FY2013; FY2014; FY2015; FY2016; FY2017; FY2018; FY2019″ values=”%5B%7B%22title%22%3A%22Number%20of%20Donors%22%2C%22y_values%22%3A%22235%3B%20282%3B%20353%3B%20417%3B%20400%3B%20405%3B%20402%3B%20457%3B%20461%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22blue%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22Gifts%20and%20Private%20Grants%20(in%20%24000’s)%22%2C%22y_values%22%3A%22157%3B%20241%3B%20350%3B%20404%3B%20295%3B%20288%3B%20357%3B%20483%3B%201261%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22turquoise%22%7D%5D” title=”Donor Participation Since 2011″][mk_divider][vc_column_text responsive_align=”left”]

Why does high donor participation matter?

This large number of donors (more than 1 in 5 of our members) is something that distinguishes ASOR from all other learned societies. And it matters, as the high level of donor participation from our membership engages the attention of foundations and major donors outside ASOR and helps us attract gifts and support from them.

Your donations also enable ASOR to carry out our mission. Subscriptions and memberships only account for about a quarter of our annual budget, so we rely on grants and donations from our members and friends. Even modest gifts add up to create significant support for ASOR, Truly, every donor is important, and every gift is meaningful.

Fiscal Year 2019 Honor Roll of Donors

If you are one of the people who made a gift to ASOR in Fiscal Year 2019, thank you so much for your support. Indeed, because of the cost of relocating to our new home in Alexandria, VA, your support has never been more beneficial.

Please take this opportunity to check out everyone who contributed in FY2019 by clicking on our Honor Roll of Donors. We hope that you will also review the list of FY19 Honorific and Memorial Gifts. If we made an error in listing your name on the Honor Roll, we ask that you kindly e-mail us so that we can correct the mistake.

If you would like to get a head start on joining the list of donors to ASOR for Fiscal Year 2020 (ends June 30, 2020) and help us reach the second part of our challenge pledge, please click on the “Donate Now” button below!

5 2 DONORS NEEDED TO QUALIFY FOR $450,000

Update: We have 448 donors as of June 28th!

James F. Strange Center

Thanks to our generous members, ASOR has raised funds to finance part of the purchase price for a new ASOR home in Alexandria, VA—The James F. Strange Center. Moving into our new home was and is an amazing accomplishment (see moving article), but we are not quite finished. In addition to paying off the debt and furnishing the building, we need a successful Annual Fund drive (ends June 30th) in order to cover one-time expenses associated with moving from Boston to Alexandria.

Fortunately, we have received an extraordinary challenge pledge of $450,000 that will ensure our success for the building—but we need to earn this gift by meeting two separate challenges by June 30 (one by June 30 and one by December 31):

  • First, we must demonstrate that we are all behind ASOR’s many initiatives by securing 450 unique donors by June 30, 2019. Donations may be for any purpose, including the Annual Fund (unrestricted).
  • Second (and separate from the participation goal), we must raise $225,000 in new gifts and pledges for the building by December 31, 2019. To date, we have received gifts and pledges of $171,402 for this challenge—so we only need $53,598 more.

We thank you for your partnership. Your donations enable ASOR to carry out our mission at a higher level and with greater impact. Even modest gifts add up to create significant support for ASOR, and the high level of donor participation from our memberships helps us attract gifts from foundations and major donors. Truly, every donor is important, and every gift is meaningful. This year, every gift helps us earn an additional $450,000![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text responsive_align=”left”]

If you are one of the 445 448 people who has already made a gift, thank you for your support. If you have not yet made a gift this fiscal year, please consider joining the ranks of ASOR donors (click here to see the donors from last year—Fiscal Year 2018). We have just over two weeks to reach our goal, so please make a gift today![/vc_column_text][mk_divider][mk_table]

ASOR ONLINE RESOURCES

[/vc_column_text][mk_divider][vc_column_text]Over the past couple of weeks, the ASOR staff has begun assembling a collection of online resources and teaching materials to aid our members and friends who have switched to online teaching. ASOR’s portal of online resources is a work in progress and we are extremely grateful to all of you who have already contributed! Some of the materials available include a guide to the online features of ASOR’s journals, guidelines for using Zoom, links to syllabi and lesson plans, and online image resources. ASOR’s Early Career Scholars have also been active in helping people switch to online. Last Thursday, they hosted an online meeting entitled “Online Teaching: From Triage to Best Practice.”

Please continue to share online resources, websites, teaching aids, guidelines, or advice that you feel could be useful. We recognize that many have been forced into a position of teaching online, and ASOR wants to provide a portal where we can share ideas and help each other. Please email Marta Ostovich at programs@asor.org with any resources you would like to share with your colleagues. We also welcome your suggestions and offers to volunteer in helping us set up these resources.

Stay tuned as our online resources continue to expand!

Much of the content for these online resources came from H. Dixon, “What’s Already Out There? Online Resources for Teaching Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Cognate Fields,” Creative Pedagogies for Teaching the Ancient Near East and Egypt session (M. Ameri and H. Dixon, chairs), 2019 ASOR Annual Meeting, San Diego.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1567019695971{margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684008271{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

PICK YOUR TOOLS FOR MARCH FELLOWSHIP MADNESS 2019—The Finals

[/vc_column_text][mk_skill_meter title=”We have raised $6,295 of our $6,000 goal!” percent=”105″ title_color=”#000000″ progress_bar_color=”#2f2f80″ track_bar_color=”#eeeeee”][mk_divider][vc_column_text]

Our goal was to raise $6,000 during March—enough to fund 3 fellowships—so that we can award a total of 26 fellowships for summer excavation. WE DID IT TOGETHER. Thanks to your generosity we raised more than we did in March 2018!

Since 2007, with the generous support of our members and donors, ASOR has awarded over 635 fellowships, grants, scholarships, and travel awards. These fellowships and grants total just over $750,000, and they have enabled students and scholars across the Near East and the Mediterranean to uncover the past and to broaden our knowledge of the ancient world.

This year, YOU gave the tools that fellowship recipients need to succeed in the field!

Each tool below corresponds with a giving level. The Pickaxe was the most popular tool chosen (purchased) to help excavate the mosaic artifact below! ASOR is fortunate to have many generous members and friends.

Want to continue helping young scholars in the field? Click on a tool to navigate to our online store where you can type in your donation amount. Select “Excavation Scholarships” as your gift purpose:

Please also remember: we have a matching gift of $450,000 for the new office building that requires 450 donors to donate $10 or more to ASOR by June 30, 2019. Every donation to a fellowship counted towards this challenge—so every dollar you gave helped support both fellowships and the new office building![/vc_column_text][mk_divider][vc_progress_bar values=”%5B%7B%22label%22%3A%22Brush-%22%2C%22value%22%3A%224%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%235b90bf%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Trowl-%22%2C%22value%22%3A%226%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%23b17fe2%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Pickaxe-%22%2C%22value%22%3A%229%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%23dda1d4%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Shovel-%22%2C%22value%22%3A%224%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%2347a570%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Bucket%22%2C%22value%22%3A%222%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%23dd8a0d%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Wheelbarrow-%22%2C%22value%22%3A%223%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%2389d653%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%5D” bgcolor=”custom” units=” Tools” title=”How many tools did you give?” css=”.vc_custom_1554135591738{background-color: #ffffff !important;}” customtxtcolor=”#000000″ custombgcolor=”#ff5b5b”][mk_divider][vc_column_text]If you donate to Excavation Scholarships, you support archaeology in a very direct way. PICK YOUR TOOLS FOR MARCH FELLOWSHIP MADNESS—2019 (Week 3)

[/vc_column_text][mk_skill_meter title=”We have raised $2,755 of our $6,000 goal!” percent=”46″ title_color=”#000000″ progress_bar_color=”#dd3333″ track_bar_color=”#eeeeee”][mk_divider][vc_column_text]Since 2007, with the generous support of our members and donors, ASOR has awarded over 635 fellowships, grants, scholarships, and travel awards. These fellowships and grants total just over $750,000, and they have enabled students and scholars across the Near East and the Mediterranean to uncover the past and to broaden our knowledge of the ancient world. Our goal is to raise $6,000 during March so that we can award 26 fellowships for summer excavation.

This year, give the tools that fellowship recipients need to succeed in the field!

Each tool below corresponds with a giving level. We will also track each tool’s selection to see which one will be used to continue to excavate a special ASOR artifact (see below)! ASOR is fortunate to have many generous members and friends and any gift (tool) will truly make a difference.

Click on a tool to navigate to our online store where you can type in your donation amount. Select “Excavation Scholarships” as your gift purpose:

Help today by giving a tool to finish the work! After two weeks, your gifts and tools have helped uncover a corner of this artifact. As the tools increase, the rest of the artifact will be revealed.

Please also remember: we have a matching gift of $450,000 for the new office building that requires 450 donors to donate $10 or more to ASOR by June 30, 2019. Every donation to a fellowship counts towards this challenge, in addition to sending students and early career scholars into the field—so make every dollar count twice for both fellowships and the new office building![/vc_column_text][mk_divider][vc_progress_bar values=”%5B%7B%22label%22%3A%22Brush-%22%2C%22value%22%3A%222%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%235b90bf%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Trowl-%22%2C%22value%22%3A%226%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%23b17fe2%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Pickaxe-%22%2C%22value%22%3A%229%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%23dda1d4%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Shovel-%22%2C%22value%22%3A%223%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%2347a570%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Bucket%22%2C%22value%22%3A%221%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%23dd8a0d%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Wheelbarrow-%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22custom%22%2C%22customcolor%22%3A%22%2389d653%22%2C%22customtxtcolor%22%3A%22%23000000%22%7D%5D” bgcolor=”custom” units=” Tools” title=”How many tools have you given?” css=”.vc_custom_1553276706380{background-color: #ffffff !important;}” customtxtcolor=”#000000″ custombgcolor=”#ff5b5b”][mk_divider][vc_column_text]If you donate to March Fellowship Madness, you support archaeology in a very direct way. STEINMETZ FELLOWSHIPS FOR ACTIVE/RESERVE MILITARY OR VETERANS

Established in 2019 through an annual gift from Charles Steinmetz, these fellowships support the participation of U.S. military personnel or veterans in archaeological excavations. One fellowship for $2,000 will be awarded in 2019.

Application Deadline: February 1, 2019

Application Form

Eligibility

Applicants must be U.S. active or reserve military or veterans. Membership in ASOR is not required to apply, but the successful applicant will be asked to join ASOR at the Associate Membership level (only $40) or higher.

Preference will be given to individuals that have not received support through the ASOR excavation fellowship program or other funding sources for the summer of 2019. Additional preference will also be given to applicants who would not usually receive funding (for airfare, lodging or a stipend) from the excavation. Preference is also given to applicants who have not received ASOR funding for excavations in the past three years.

Applications must include the contact information for the director of the excavation project.

Upon completion of the field season, a report of 250-350 words and three appropriate photos (500 dpi resolution or higher) on site must be submitted to the ASOR office by August 15, 2019. Reports and photos should be sent via email with “ASOR Veteran Fellowship report” in the subject line. More information will be available after the recipients have been notified.

Fellowship recipients will be required to sign a waiver indicating that ASOR is not responsible for any injuries they might sustain during their time at the excavation in which they participate. They will also be required to sign a release of rights to ASOR for the inclusion of their report and photographs in one of ASOR’s publications.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684098866{margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684008271{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

A Home for ASOR

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]When ASOR was established in 1900, our office was one large room in a Jerusalem hotel. During the past 118 years, we have dramatically expanded our scholarly capacity and public outreach—both abroad and in North America. By 1925, we built a permanent home in Jerusalem. Yet in North America, we moved frequently, from one host institution to another. Now, it is time for ASOR to establish an independent headquarters to serve our broadened constituencies. Our goal is to raise $1.5 million to purchase an enduring home for ASOR in the Washington, D.C. area—a location that is of greatest strategic benefit to our mission.

Please join us in this historic undertaking—and help us honor ASOR’s distinguished past and its commitment to serving students, scholars, and the public for generations to come—by making a gift or pledge.

Why Washington. D.C.? A home for ASOR in the Washington, D.C. area will facilitate our engagement with federal agencies and Washington-area higher-education associations that foster the scholarship of our 2000 dues-paying members and 72 member institutions. This home will enhance our communication with government partners, Washington-based international organizations, and foreign embassies that support our members’ and our cultural heritage teams’ overseas research. This home will strengthen ASOR’s interactions with colleagues in other learned societies that are Washington-based and will provide ASOR with a national and international platform from which to launch improved outreach programs that will increase public understanding of the Near East and wider Mediterranean.

The ASOR Board of Trustees has identified Alexandria, VA—a hub of non-profits with easy access to downtown Washington—as a location where we can find an office building within our price range.

How Can You Help? Between February and November 2018, we raised $750,000 in gifts and pledges to support the purchase of our new home, and generous end-of-the year (2018) donations have now brought that total up to $910,000. With the help of loyal friends and members like you, we know we can keep this momentum going and raise our total goal of $1.5 million over the next four years — or even sooner! Naming opportunities exist at the following levels:

  • Naming of building = $1,000,000
  • Naming of conference room or floor = $300,000 – $500,000
  • Naming of an individual office (sizes vary) = $100,000 – $200,000
  • Name recognition on smaller office spaces = $25,000 – $99,999
  • Name on plaque recognizing major donors = $10,000 or more
  • Name on a plaque recognizing all donors at “brick” level or higher = $250 or more

Please give generously today![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684098866{margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684008271{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Materiality of Religion in Judean Households: A Contextual Analysis of Ritual Objects from Iron II Tell en-Naṣbeh

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
Available until December 21, 2018[/vc_column_text][mk_divider][vc_column_text]Near Eastern Archaeology, September 2018, “Materiality of Religion in Judean Households: A Contextual Analysis of Ritual Objects from Iron II Tell en-Naṣbeh” by Aaron Brody (Badè Museum at Pacific School of Religion)

The author highlights household religion through a direct, contextual presentation of ritual artifacts from one Judean household compound at Tell en-Naṣbeh in their original contexts. The compound is made of five conjoined pillared houses that constitute the living space of one extended family. The author takes a gendered approach to the artifacts, which include female pillar figurines, animal figurines, horse-and-rider figurines, incense stands, and zoomorphic vessels. Ritualized utilitarian objects are also taken into account. This approach to ritual at the site adds to our understanding of the religious culture of women, men, children, families, and households at Naṣbeh. Most notably the author proposes that the concentration of ritual objects near the two kitchen spaces in the compound suggests that the female head of household who provided sustenance for the extended family and its dependents also presided over the religious health of the household.
