JPASS

Individual Access to All JSTOR Journals for ASOR Members
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Have you ever wished for access to all of the academic journals found in the archival collection of JSTOR, but didn’t have an academic affiliation that allowed access? Now ASOR can help!

Introducing JPASS

JPASS: Your personal access plan to a digital library of more than 1,500 academic journals on JSTOR. Access the most influential research and ideas published in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences over centuries anytime, anywhere.

Designed for those without institutional access to the JSTOR archival collections, JPASS is ideal for society members working outside of the academy. It is also valuable for faculty members at institutions with limited access to JSTOR, and for adjuncts with sporadic access to library resources.

ASOR has partnered with JSTOR to provide individual access to all of these journals (not just ASOR journals). Regardless of your institutional affiliation, JPASS serves as your personal library card to the rich selection of journals on JSTOR. The regular price for individuals is $199, but current ASOR members can receive a 50% discount if they sign up through ASOR. That’s right, you can get access to all of the archived journals for just $99.00! JPASS includes unlimited reading and 120 article downloads from the JSTOR archival collections. Moreover, if you are an ASOR member with an online subscription, you will continue to receive unlimited access to ASOR’s current journals plus all of the archived journals found in the JPASS collection. ASOR is pleased to offer this discount as a member benefit—all you need to do is email ASOR or call us at 617-358-4376. Upon confirmation of your current membership, we will send you the necessary code for ordering JPASS at 50% off.

How It Works

ASOR members who purchase a JPASS plan at a discounted member price will be granted unlimited reading access and limited downloading of articles in JPASS. Current journals, books, and primary sources are not included in the JPASS offer, unless you are an ASOR member with online access. Here’s a summary of what you’ll receive through JPASS:

  • Individual access to archival material on JSTOR regardless of your institutional affiliation
  • Unlimited access for reading articles; download up to 120 articles (PDFs) per year
  • 83% of the archival journals are available on JPASS
  • 1,500 high quality journals
  • 7 million academic articles and reviews
  • 920 leading publishers

An expansion of JSTOR’s ongoing efforts to reach individuals, including Register & Read, Alumni Access, and Early Journal Content, JPASS continues JSTOR’s mission of helping people discover, use, and build upon trusted scholarly content. Users who belong to a JSTOR-participating institution will not be affected by the launch of JPASS; our efforts here are aimed at people enthusiastic about research (whether personal or professional), but who do not belong to a university, organization, or public library with access to JSTOR.

If you have questions about JPASS and would like access at the discounted ASOR member rate, email us at publications@asor.org or call us at 617-236-0408.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684098866{margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684008271{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

ASOR ANNOUNCES A MAJOR LEGACY CHALLENGE GIFT ($475,000) AS A PART OF THE BUILDING A FOUNDATION FOR ASOR CAMPAIGN

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]As ASOR moves into the final nine months of our Building a Foundation for ASOR Campaign, we are pleased to announce that we have received a major legacy gift and challenge. An anonymous ASOR trustee has pledged to make a legacy gift that has a current market value of $475,000 and has given ASOR two challenges:

  1. Donor Participation: 300 donors in this fiscal year by January 31, 2014. Our goal is 400 donors between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014, so meeting the benchmark of 300 by January 31st would put us well on our way to meeting our annual goal. Last year ASOR had 352 donors in the fiscal year, and we have seen dramatic increases in participation every year for the last five years (see graph below).
  2. Total Contributions to ASOR this fiscal year: Receive $200,000 in total gifts and pledges by January 31, 2014. As of December 14, we have already received $127,000 in gifts and pledges this fiscal year (which began July 1). Therefore, we need to raise $73,000 in new gifts and pledges by January 31, 2014 to meet this challenge. Our goal is to meet this challenge by December 31, and everyone gift to ASOR (whatever the designation) helps.

Challenge Gift Ensures Successful Foundational Campaign

The Foundational Campaign was officially launched with a unanimous vote by the ASOR board at the 2011 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The primary goals of the first phase of the campaign were to expand ASOR’s donor base, while concurrently seeking to make substantial progress on the $1.3 million goal of the campaign. We are pleased to announce that the campaign has met and exceeded both of these goals! We set a new record last year with 352 different donors—equivalent to more than 1 in 5 ASOR members—who made a charitable contribution, and we have received $900,000 in gifts and pledges toward the campaign!

Now that we are entering the final seven months of the campaign, we have set our sights on meeting the $1.3 million goal by June 30, 2014. We need $300,000 in seven months to reach our goal. We also have a goal of reaching 400 separate donors this fiscal year, which ends June 30. Any gifts made to ASOR for the annual fund, scholarships, or any other program or area, will count towards our comprehensive campaign goal.

Highlights of Achievements Made Possible Last Year by the Foundational Campaign

The following are some of the highlights of things that we accomplished because of your generous particpation in this campaign:

  • Expanded the annual page count of BASOR by 25%
  • Moved BASOR to full color and the journal was completely redesigned
  • Launched an outreach e-newsletter, titled The Ancient Near East Today and the Friends of ASOR program through the assistance of trustee Stevan Dana and the Lanier Theological Library
  • Launched a new member-oriented e-newsletter, News@ASOR, with the assistance of the Kershaw Family Trust
  • Awarded 55 field scholarships and excavation grants
  • Awarded 3 complete scholarships to enable one scholar from Iran and two scholars from Jordan to attend the Annual Meeting
  • Awarded 15 travel scholarships to help students attend the Annual Meeting
  • Established a new endowed scholarship fund in honor of Board Chair Emeritus P. E. MacAllister
  • Our endowment accounts (for operations and scholarships) have grown from $750,000 in 2007 to over $1,100,000 today in spite of some turbulent years in the stock market
  • Began a new digital archives project with the assistance of the David Berg Foundation to make ASOR’s Nelson Glueck collection more accessible online
  • Published four books and site reports in the last year
  • Continued to publish NEA, JCS, and BASOR on time, and continued to maintain and increase their quality
  • Experienced growth in the ASOR Facebook page—grew to more than 6,500 “Likes”
  • Experienced dramatic growth in the readership of the ASOR Blog—more than 12,500 unique visitors per month and more than 1.5 million hits in the last year
  • Partnered with 67 affiliated excavation projects (34 field and 33 publication)
  • Supported the work of our three affiliated research centers in Jerusalem, Amman, and Nicosia.

ASOR WELCOMES INDA OMEREFENDIC

Interim Publications and Fulfillment Manager
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]This September, Inda Omerefendic joined the full-time staff of ASOR as the Interim Publications and Fulfillment Manager.  Inda will be stepping in for Kevin Cooney, who is moving on to a Membership Coordinator position at WERS, a local radio station in Boston, after working at ASOR for seven years. Inda will become the primary office contact for support of ASOR’s publications, membership and subscription services, and fulfillment needs.  Her e-mail address is publications@asor.org and she can be reached by phone at (617) 358-4376.

Inda recently graduated from Boston University with a B.A. in Environmental Analysis and Policy and has worked at ASOR as a student since 2010.  Her mother is Selma Omerefendic, ASOR’s Financial Administrator, and she has grown up with ASOR as a part of her life. Inda has enjoyed traveling with her family since she was young, recently visiting Egypt and Jordan, some of her favorite sites being Petra in Jordan and the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. While visiting Petra, she was fortunate enough to visit Brown University’s excavation site (see photo).

Inda has enjoyed living close to Boston her whole life and traveling every summer to visit her family in Bosnia.  She is excited about taking on more responsibility at ASOR in this new position and working closely with the digital media specialist to increase outreach to those interested in archaeology and historical discovery.

THE BUILDING A FOUNDATION FOR ASOR CAMPAIGN

October 2013 Update
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

The Foundational Campaign was officially launched with a unanimous vote by the ASOR board at the 2011 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The goal of the campaign was to raise $1.3 million over three years (ending June 30, 2014) so that 1) we could build the foundation for a stronger and more secure ASOR and 2) we could transform ASOR with new scholarships and a few crucial initiatives. Now that we are entering the final nine months of the campaign, we have set our sights on meeting the $1.3 million goal by June 30, 2014. As of October 1, 2013, we have received $900,000 in gifts and pledges, so we are well on the way to achieving our goal. Any gifts made to ASOR for the annual fund, scholarships, or any other program or area will count towards our comprehensive campaign goal. These gifts will also help us qualify for a $475,000 legacy challenge gift, so your support is more important than ever before.

A Vision for ASOR in the 21st Century

ASOR affirms its historic mission and the priorities that have guided it as an organization since its inception in 1900. Central to these priorities is ASOR’s identity as a learned society with a constituency sharing an interest in and deep commitment to the study and public understanding of the cultures and history of the Near East. These core values continue to unite ASOR. As the preeminent professional association dedicated to the study of the cultures and history of the Near and Middle East, ASOR seeks to build on this legacy. We need to secure a financial foundation that will ensure the achievement of out long-term vision. Today ASOR has 1,550 individual members, 90 institutional members, and 71 affiliated archaeological projects. We are a widely-respected advocate for the protection and preservation of the region’s unique cultural heritage. This campaign—brief in extent but vital in mission—will fundamentally transform ASOR’s ability to serve students, teachers, scholars, and the public at large in the 21st century. At the same time, and of lasting importance, our campaign will ensure the advancement of ASOR’s mission in perpetuity.

This campaign will also render ASOR a model for change and renewal within other fields of academic study in the humanities and social sciences. In the Academy, the need for revitalizing education in the humanities is clear, and of critical concern today. A new generation of scholars is rising within ASOR with interests that reach beyond the traditional fields of Biblical Studies, Languages and History into a broad interdisciplinary range that includes Anthropology, Ethnography, Geography, Museum Studies, and Environmental, Life and Physical Sciences. With its core commitment to creating and expanding research and educational opportunities within this dynamic intellectual environment, ASOR is well-positioned to play a role in higher education that is both timely and of real consequence. We must ensure the preservation of ASOR’s global role far into the future. We ask that you help make this a successful campaign.

Building a Foundation for ASOR

Funding is needed to support ASOR’s vital vision. As a charitable organization, ASOR’s membership and subscription revenues account for only 38% of the annual budget. ASOR depends on the financial generosity of its membership. We have a critical need not only to sustain and grow our current programs, but also to endow them in perpetuity. The campaign will seek to address three interconnected resource challenges:

  1. Program Endowment (Goal $550,000). We seek to grow the ASOR endowment ($450,000 at the beginning of the campaign) to $1 million, which will enable ASOR to better underwrite its operations and thereby ensure more robust and vibrant support for its programs into the future.
  2. Research and Training (Goal $200,000). We seek to secure endowment support for field research in order to underwrite the expenses for researchers in ASOR-related field projects, and to provide subventions to research projects for their infrastructure needs. ASOR seeks $100,000 for affiliated project field support, and $100,000 for student field research and travel fellowships.
  3. Online Digital Media Resources (Goal $250,000). We seek to secure the funding required to complete the construction of an online Near Eastern Digital portal, and to establish the ASOR Archives as a research destination with the capacity to provide broad, sustainable public access.

The campaign goal is to raise $1 million in new funds over three years (completed by June 30, 2014) targeting specific resource needs in each of these critical areas, while continuing to meet our $100,000 annual fund budget commitment. Our total goal is thus $1.3 million. A concurrent campaign goal will be to increase membership in the Legacy Circle (those have made a planned gift to ASOR) from 10 to 50. Meeting our total campaign goal of $1.3 million will secure a foundation for future growth and accomplishment as ASOR continues its strong legacy into the 21st Century. The dramatic increase in planned gifts will transform how ASOR can carry out its mission in perpetuity.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684098866{margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684008271{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

TEN THINGS TO DO IN BALTIMORE

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]While you’re in town for the 2014 ASOR Annual Meeting, be sure to take some time to relax and explore Baltimore. Here are ten things to see around the city:

1. The Walters Art Museum was first opened to the public in 1934. It now houses a collection of over 35,000 objects from all around the world including Greek sculpture and Art Deco jewelry. General admission to the Walters Art Museum is free and Constellation Nights are held every Thursday. Be sure to check out the “Egypt’s Mysterious Book of the Faiyum” exhibit.

2. The Inner Harbor in Baltimore has been a major US seaport since the 1700s. Today it is a center of activity with stores, restaurants, museums, and more all within walking distance. From here you can also take narrated boat tours of the city.

3. While in the Inner Harbor you can take some time to see the over 16,000 animals at the National Aquarium. The aquarium is home to everything from sharks to jellyfish. It also features daily 4-D immersion films where you can experience a new view of the animals.

4. Take a walk on the wild side by visting the elephants at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. They offer numerous animal experiences like feeding a giraffe or grooming a goat. As the third oldest zoo in America, it houses nearly 200 species of birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles.

5. Visit the largest holdings of works by Henri Matisse in the world at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The museum was founded in 1914 and now has 90,000 works of art in its collections. Aside from the indoor exhibits, there are also two gardens displaying 20th century scultpture. Be sure to see the Antioch Mosaics exhibit.

6. In the 1920s, John W. Sherwood began planting tulips as a hobby. Today, 80,000 tulip bulbs are planted annually on the over six acres of Sherwood Gardens. Come enjoy the garden from any direction, as it isn’t enclosed by any gates or fences.

7. Although the Baltimore Orioles won’t be playing, you can still visit their stadium at the Camden Yards. You can take a tour of this historic stadium to see the dugout, control room, and much more! It is also located nearby the M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Ravens, 2013 Super Bowl Champions.

8. See a piece of American history by visiting the Fort McHenry National Monument. It was at this star-shaped fort that Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the Star-Bangled Banner during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814.

9. Learn something new by exploring the three levels of exhibits at the Maryland Science Center. You can see over a dozen full-size dinosaurs displayed, view the night sky in the planetarium, or watch films in the IMAX theater.

10. See a great view of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and skyline from Federal Hill Park. The park is part of a historic district of Baltimore since it was used as a lookout spot during both the War of 1812 and the Civil War. You should come prepared for walking since the options to get to the top are stairs or rolling hills.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684098866{margin-right: 5px !important;margin-bottom: 20px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_wp_posts title=”BROWSE THE NEWS ARCHIVE” number=”4″][/vc_column][vc_column border_color=”rgba(170,170,170,0.01)” width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1496684008271{margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 30px !important;border-right-width: 2px !important;border-bottom-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 30px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-right-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;border-bottom-color: rgba(227,228,228,0.75) !important;}”][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This webinar will explore the controversies swirling around the role of Jerusalem at the beginning of the monarchic era. It will consider the relationship of archaeological discoveries to the biblical narratives about the most famous biblical kings, David and Solomon. It will also take into account the nature of the Jebusite/Canaanite city that preceded Israelite rule. KAITLYNN ANDERSON

Digital Media Specialist
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Kaitlynn recently joined the ASOR staff as our Digital Media Specialist. Learn more about the staff member behind the ASOR blog, Facebook page, and Twitter.

Hello all!
My name is Kaitlynn Anderson and I’m the new Digital Media Specialist here at ASOR. I’m very excited about starting at this position and getting to meet a lot of you at the annual meeting in Baltimore this November.

A little about me: I grew up in a large family with five sisters and two brothers. Growing up, I was an active member with 4-H and the Tri-State Young Marines. I always had a passion for storytelling and video. When I was a senior in high school, I won first place in the video category at a state-level competition. From that point, I knew I wanted to work with video later in my life.

I graduated from West Virginia University in 2011 with a Bachelors of Science in Broadcast Journalism. During college, I worked on the news staff at the radio station U-92 “The Moose”, and became the youngest student to host the talk show “Feedback.” I took every chance I could to create new videos, from cultural videos during my time abroad to working as the official videographer for WVU NEWS during my senior year.

I spent a lot of time during and after college working with nonprofits and community service driven organizations. I joined the coed community service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, and held several offices while an active member. I often volunteered my services as a videographer and created several multi-media campaigns (and a few fun videos) for the organization. I later became an advisor of the WVU chapter.

My summers were spent working as a 4-H Extension Camp Instructor, where I taught classes on digital media and broadcasting. It’s always fun getting the kids involved. One summer, I was approached by a biology PhD graduate student who wanted to start a Science on Tap program. Their goal was to bring science to the community over pizza and beer. I volunteered my time to film the event each month and put it online for those who could not attend.

After graduation, I worked for the West Virginia Uncovered Project through AmeriCorps. At WV Uncovered, I worked to create relationships between the newspapers and schools in partner areas by initiating digital media training for educators in local schools. I also helped the WVU Communications program create an organ donor commercial with a few of their students.

Now that I’m with ASOR, I hope to bring my passion for video here too. I believe we can use digital media to increase communication – not just between the ASOR staff and all of our members, but between our organization and the public. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out our new YouTube channel, ASORtv. Oh, and follow us on twitter @AmerSchOrietRes and like us on Facebook. I look forward to seeing you all at the Annual Meeting!
