The Levantine Ceramics Project (LCP) is a collaborative venture of archaeologists working on Levantine ceramics of all eras—from the Neolithic period (c. 5500 B.C.E.) through Ottoman times (c. 1920). Regular workshops are an integral component of the project. At workshops contributors present new discoveries and add information to the LCP’s ever-growing data set. We share ideas, discuss issues of terminology and definition, and better our overall understanding of the field.

Since 2012 the LCP has facilitated workshops in Greece, Israel, Turkey, Poland, Belgium, France, and the United States. In 2019 we will hold three workshops: in Turkey, Cyprus, and Israel. Workshops are always open to all scholars, students, and anybody interested in the study of Levantine pottery.

If you are interested in hosting or participating in an LCP workshop, please contact the LCP editor (aberlin@bu.edu) for more information.

2019 Workshops

JUNE 20TH, 2019: Levantine Wares of the Islamic, Frankish, and Ottoman Periods

Albright Institute of Archaeological Research, Jerusalem

The Levantine Ceramics Project invite your participation in a workshop devoted to Levantine ceramic wares of the Islamic, Frankish, and Ottoman periods, to be held Thursday, June 20th, 2019 at the Albright Institute, in Jerusalem. Our goal is to build up the LCP’s data set of pottery of these later eras via descriptions and scientific analyses, and to add examples of specific vessels along with drawings and photographs.

Presentations will focus on wares that have been submitted to the LCP in advance of the workshop. The organizers will compile and circulate a list of wares that should be added to the LCP. Participants are encouraged to “adopt” one or more wares to add to the site; you may also add wares that are not on the list. You may submit as much information as you like, and in the workshop you may give more than one presentation. We ask that you submit data by April 30th, 2019.

The day will be organized in two parts. In the morning there will be presentations and discussions of wares that have already been submitted. In the afternoon participants will be able to add examples of vessels along with illustrations (people should bring a flash drive with vessel information and images).

JUNE 13-14TH, 2019: Ceramic Wares of Cyprus from Neolithic through Medieval times

CAARI, Nicosia

The Levantine Ceramics Project and CAARI invite your participation in a workshop devoted to ceramics and ceramic production in Cyprus, to be held Thursday, June 13th – Friday, June 14th, 2019. In this workshop our goal is to continue building up the site’s data set regarding Cypriot ceramics, begun in earnest at the first LCP-Cyprus workshop held in May 2017 in Athens.

For this workshop, sessions will be organized around data submitted to the LCP in advance. Presentations may focus on ceramic wares/ware families, vessels, kiln/workshop sites, and/or archaeometric studies. You may submit as much information as you like, and you may give more than one presentation in the workshop. We ask that you submit your data by April 15th, 2019.

MAY 23-24TH, 2019: Ceramics of Anatolia through the ages, with a focus on Lycia and Cilicia

Bilkent University, Ankara

The Levantine Ceramics Project and the Department of Archaeology at Bilkent University invite your participation in a workshop on the longue durée of ceramic production across Anatolia, with special attention to the regions of Lycia and Cilicia, to be held Thursday, May 23rd – Friday, May 24th, 2019. In this workshop our goal is to continue building up the site’s data set, begun at the Keramos-LCP workshop held in May 2018 in Izmir, which focused on ceramic wares of Turkey from the Archaic to the Roman eras.

For this workshop, we are not asking for traditional papers, but rather presentations on data submitted to the LCP in advance of the workshop. Submissionsmay focus on ceramic wares/ware families, vessels, kiln/workshop sites, and/or archaeometric studies. You may submit as much information as you like, and you may give more than one presentation. We ask that you submit your data by March 30th, 2019.
