INSTRUCTIONS FOR WRITING REVIEWS FOR NEA
An NEA review should include a balanced, accurate
description of the book’s contents as well as an assessment,
positive and negative, and some indication of the book’s
audience and usefulness. A popular work should be judged differently
than a technical work and vice versa.
Book reviews are not reviewed by outside referees and are
generally shorter than articles. We suggest a limit of 600–1200
words, with shorter reviews preferred.
References should be avoided in reviews if at all possible.
If unavoidable, they should follow the reference style sheet
provided in NEA's instructions
for contributors.
Please provide full bibliographic information including the
following sample information in this format at the beginning
of your review:
The Cult of Asherah in Ancient Israel and Judah: Evidence
for a Hebrew Goddess. By Judith M. Hadley. University of
Cambridge Oriental Publications, 57. Cambridge: Cambridge
University Press, 2000. Pp. xv + 262; plates, maps. Cloth,
$65.00, ISBN 0-521-66235-4.
Attach your name and institution at the end of your review.
If you do not have an institutional affiliation, please give
your city and state.
We anticipate that reviews will be completed within two to
three months of receipt of the book. Reviewers anticipating
delays should inform NEA's book
review editor as soon as possible.
