Acknowledgments
I wish to thank Dr. Walter E. Aufrecht of the Department
of Geography, The University of Lethbridge, for initially
suggesting this index as a project and for providing much
appreciated guidance, encouragement, and editing during its
compilation.
I am happy also to express my appreciation to Mr. D. Bruce
MacKay, author of the previous index to Biblical Archaeologist,
for preparing the way for me and for sharing his insights
into the programs.
Finally, I must thank my friends and family, especially my
husband Todd, for support and encouragement throughout my
work on this project.

Foreword
This index represents the most recent reference tool intended
to facilitate the use of the wealth of information that has
appeared in the pages of Biblical Archaeologist. It
covers five years of the journal's life, 1983 1987.
Previous indices stretch back to the inception of BA in 1938.
These indices can be found as follows:
Volumes 1--5 in volume 5:4 (1942):62--71.
Volumes 6--10 in volume 10:4(1947):86--92.
Volumes 11--15 in volume 15:4 (1952):90--96.
Volumes 16--20 in volume 20:4 (1957):106--112.
Volumes 21--25 in volume 25:4 (1962):121--130.
Volumes 26--30 in volume 30:4 (1967):140--156
Volumes 31--35 in volume 35:4 (1972):128--144.
Volumes 36--45 in A Comprehensive Index to Biblical Archaeologist
Compiled by D. Bruce MacKay. ASOR: 1986.
Like its immediate predecessor, this index offers a variety
of means of access to BA, including a listing of illustrations.
The articles indexed span the wide range of study of the ancient
cultures of the Near East and eastern Mediterranean which
Biblical Archaeologist uniquely makes available. This
broad scholarship was published under the distinguished tenure
of former editor Eric M. Meyers.
It remains to express appreciation for the labors of Wendy
Shury in preparing this index. Her care and thoroughness have
shaped a comprehensive and reliable tool. Deborah Sokolove
designed the text, making it both readable in use and economical
in production.
An electronic version of the index may be accessed via the
Scholars Press World Wide Web site on the Internet called
TELA. The current access number is: <http://scholar.cc.emory.edu>.
The availability of the index on Internet signals the new
era of electronic publication and may mean that the next index
will not find its way to the printing press. Be that as it
may, ASOR and the editorial committee of Biblical Archaeologist
are pleased to make this new tool available to its readership.
