EXCAVATION GRANTS & DIG FELLOWSHIPS

404 ASOR Dig Fellowships and Excavation Grants Awarded Since 2007

In the summer of 2007, ASOR renewed its emphasis on providing funding grants and fellowships that allow individuals to participate in excavations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Since 2007, ASOR has awarded 404 researchers and students with excavation grants and fellowships through the Dever, Harris, Heritage, MacAllister, Meyers, Meyers/Wright, Platt, Sheeler, Strange/Midkiff, and Member Supported Fellowships.

List of Previous Recipients

Fellowships for Excavation Participants ($2,000 each)

  • Heritage Fellowships: In addition to endowed fellowships, each year generous ASOR donors support Heritage fellowships for students and other worthy individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 1, 2018.
  • P. E. MacAllister Fellowships: These fellowships were made possible by a generous endowment given by the family and friends of P. E. MacAllister. These funds support scholarships for individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 1, 2018.
  • Eric and Carol Meyers Fellowships: These fellowships were made possible by a generous endowment given by the students and friends of Carol and Eric Meyers. These funds support fellowships for individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 1, 2018.
  • Shirlee Meyers/G. Ernest Wright Fellowships: These fellowships were made possible by a generous endowment given by Professors Eric and Carol Meyers. One-half of the funds awarded each year are in memory of Eric’s mother, Shirlee Meyers. The other half of the funds each year are in memory of Professor G. Ernest Wright, former ASOR President and a professor of both Eric and Carol Meyers. These funds support fellowships for individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 1, 2018.
  • Member-Supported Fellowships: These fellowships are funded by contributions from our members. Many of these gifts are made during March Fellowship Madness, and other members make contributions (ranging from $10 to $2,000) throughout the year. Whenever the gifts are made, ASOR segregates these donations into a special fund reserved for excavation fellowships that support our student and early-career members. Preference is given by the selection committee to applicants who are participanting in any of ASOR’s CAP-affiliated projects. Application deadline is February 1, 2018.
  • Platt Fellowships: These fellowships were made possible by a generous endowment given by the late Mrs. Katherine Barton Platt. These funds support fellowships for individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 1, 2018.
  • Sheeler Fellowships: These fellowships are made possible by annual contributions from the Sheeler family in celebration of Harva Sheeler’s involvement in and support of ASOR and archaeological digs. Fellowships are designated to support volunteers and staff on the Hesi Project. Application deadline: February 1, 2018.

    Strange/Midkiff Families Fellowships: These fellowships were made possible by a generous lead gift from James (Jim) F. and Carolyn Strange that was matched by their family and friends. These funds support fellowships for individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 1, 2018.

Grants to Support Excavation Projects

  • Harris Fellowship: This fellowship was made possible by a generous endowment given by the late Rev. Charles Harris. These funds support excavation work of ASOR-affiliated projects. There will be one award of $5,000 for the summer of 2018, and the application deadline is January 10, 2018.

Fellowship for Early-Career Scholars

  • William G. Dever Fellowship for Biblical Scholars:
    A two–month travel-study award of $7,000 will be made available in the summer of 2018 to a qualified American or American-based non-tenured faculty member in the field of biblical studies who wants to acquire elementary, first-hand experience in field archaeology and research in Israel. The application deadline is January 10, 2018.
