November 16 - Wednesday Plenary session

The Mesopotamian Metals Project: Recent Discoveries
The Committee on Annual Meeting and Program is pleased to announce that Prof. Emeritus James Muhly (University of Pennsylvania, American School of Classical Studies) will be the Plenary lecturer and speak on the opening night of the meeting, Wednesday November 16. Professor Muhly will speak about recent discoveries as part of the Mesopotamian Metals Project. This event will begin at 7:00pm, will take place at the conference hotel, and is free for those registered for the Annual Meeting.

November 17 - Thursday morning breakfast

Join fellow students and recent PhDs for a special breakfast Thursday morning to discuss common interests, hear about careers in archaeology, and discuss forming an ASOR Student Interest Group. Dr. Bonnie Magness-Gardiner, Program Manager in the Art Theft Program of the FBI, will give an informal talk on job opportunities for Near Eastern scholars outside of the Academy. There will also be time to network and discuss organizing sessions and other future events. Space is limited, and reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis. 11/11/05 - this event is now full.

November 17 - Thursday evening lecture

Fakes and Forgeries in the Ancient World
Our third annual Presidential Forum will focus on fakes and forgeries and the problems these pose for scholars. Chaired by ASOR President Lawrence Geraty, this Thursday evening session will feature archaeologists, a journalist specializing in the antiquities trade, and a two agents from the FBI who specialize in art theft. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, see the list of speakers.

November 18 - Friday evening dinner and lecture

An Evening of Mediterranean Digs and Delights
Join us in the grand hall of the Upper Egypt Gallery at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology for a banquet featuring Mediterranean cuisine. The evening speaker, Dr. William Dever, is widely known for his sometimes controversial stands on archaeological issues and the Bible. He has written extensively on topics like biblical archaeology, the ancient Israelites, gods and goddesses in biblical times. This event is co-sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Museum and will require a separate registration fee. Read more about the Friday evening program and make your reservation online.

Near Eastern Archaeology Tales from the Tells:
The Adventure Continues

Distinguished presenters, including several UPenn graduates with stories of their own to tell, will talk about Jerusalem, Iraq, ossuaries, and women in medieval Islam. Read the complete program of speakers.

Admission: $20 for Univ. of Pennsylvania Museum members, $25 for others, and free for those registered for the Annual Meeting (please bring your name tag).

November 19 - Saturday Teacher's Workshop

Elementary and high school teachers will be able to learn about archaeology at our annual teacher's workshop, held this year at the University of Pennsylvania Museum. The day-long event will focus on methods for teaching students about Near Eastern archaeology.
