Junior Scholar Roundtable Lunch:

"Near Eastern Scholarship - Open and Accessible in the 21st Century" a discussion with Dr. Sarah Whitcher Kansa about open and accessible scholarly communication.

Once again student members and recent PhDs active in ASOR will have an opportunity to meet together formally at this year's Annual Meeting, this time for lunch. Scholarly communication is in the midst of an important transition toward increased openness, access, scope and diversity. The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) recently called upon university counsels, boards of trustees, and provosts "to provide aggressive support for the principles of fair use and open access, and to promote awareness and use of Creative Commons licenses." The Junior Scholars Committee with the help of the Alexandria Archive Institute will host the Lunch. We will discuss these changes and how junior researchers can best position themselves to profit from this important shift toward open scholarship. We will also launch the "Junior Scholar Open Archaeology Prize", a new initiative to build awareness of open access research and enhance the prestige and community recognition of open scholarly communication.

Call for Submissions to Near Eastern Archaeology

Near Eastern Archaeology Magazine's Arti-Facts section is currently soliciting submissions for upcoming issues. Arti-Facts publishes brief articles that focus on new research or finds pertaining to Near Eastern Archaeology. Arti-Facts has also been reviewing museum exhibits traveling around North America. Arti-facts makes a particularly good venue for publishing the research of junior members. Recent conference or seminar papers, or excavation results that can be summarized in 1200 to 1500 words are particularly welcome. All time periods, countries, and materials relating to Near Eastern Archaeology are welcome.

For more about Near Eastern Archaeology Magazine, please visit http://www.asor.org/pubs/nea/index.html. I hope you will seriously consider this invitation to submit your writing. All questions and submissions should be directed to Benjamin Porter, Near Eastern Archaeology Magazine's assistant editor, at bporter@sas.upenn.edu.
